Anyone making Samantha's Gingerbread House this year? I am! =) Knowing the gingerbread won't last forever, I'm going to trace the pieces so I can make another one if I want. That way, I'll have the pattern.
A couple weeks ago I made 50 mini gingerbread houses for a cookie class I taught at a church event. To make the gingerbread houses, I used the Gingerbread House mini kit. I didn't use the recipe in the book or the little plastic chimney that comes with the kit, but I did use the cutters. Two of my sons helped to cut the dough, bake and decorate them all. The houses turned out perfect and were REALLY fun to make.
For the cookie class, each participant got to put one mini house in the center of a little cookie tray and filled the rest of the tray with cookies I made ahead of time. Then they wrapped their trays with clear plastic wrap and added a ribbon and handmade gift tag. It was fun.
It was so enjoyable making those mini gingerbread houses that I'm going to make Samantha's house this year. I've had the kit since last February (thank you, Code) and it still smells yummy when you take the lid off the box.
The label says the house isn't edible but that's ok. I'll dip it in melted paraffin wax when it's done and it should keep at least 7 or 8 years wrapped tightly. That's what I've done with other gingerbread decorations. The wax coating keeps out tiny bugs and helps the gingerbread stay ok for a long time.
